Final Project

Wow, I am bad. I finished my project on Wednesday and completely spaced posting it. Here is my completed project. I did the Student Assignment familiarizing myself with the Presidential Fitness Challenge website. Hope you enjoy!

So, doing some catching up today. For my final project, I want to do a Student Assignment based on using the US Governments Fitness program: The President's Challenge (www.presidentschallenge.org). I know that it's not "software" necessarily, but I feel that it is an online tool that can be very useful for helping start/maintain a healthy lifestyle. I will probably be targeting middle school age students while I am creating my assignment.

The REAL Project #2

Here is my REAL project. I didn't have my movie saved under the right file when I first tried to upload it on YouTube.

Project #2

Here is my uploaded video. I think it to be pretty good, considering I had two screaming children while I was filming it the entire time.

Blog Post #7

I decided to use skype to chat with my Dad. It had been a little while since I had used skype (I believe it was back around Christmas time when our family was talking to my sister-in-law) but everything seemed to be pretty much the same. One of the reasons I really like skype is that it's relatively easy and convenient to use. The buttons are very straight forward (so Grandma and Grandpa can figure it out rather quickly without much trouble) and the quality of the video/audio is much better than other video chat programs I've used.
Video chat can be used to especially help with after class learning. In one of my early general classes, I believe it was Physical Science, some of the TA's had online chat hours that they could help you out with problems or concepts that you weren't understanding in class. This was a life saver for me as I lived in Springville and wasn't always able to make it up on campus during their office hours.

How can fair use benefit you as a teacher?

Fair use can be used in the class room to better explain subjects that you are trying to teach. For example, one of my favorite TV shows made by Disney was called Pepper Ann. One of the episodes is a musical episode and her teacher sings a song about photosynthesis. That song has stuck with me every time someone starts talking about photosynthesis. As such, I decided that if I ever became a teacher, I would show that song clip to my students so they could better understand the mechanics behind photosynthesis.
I do understand the need for materials to be copyrighted. However, being able to use these materials with the fair use act that students/others are more likely to relate to will make the learning and explaining process easier for both students and teachers alike .

Making videos is something that I use to enjoy doing when I was a bit younger. My friends and I enjoyed making several movies together, including the filming, costuming, scripting, and making the music. I have some very fond memories of making those movies and even have a few in my possession. However, I did not enjoy the acting part of movies. I really liked helping one of my best friends, Kacey, with the editing and everything else after that. So with making my own movies, I really like compiling them, but not actually being in them. I have a pretty good understanding of Windows Movie Maker so I mostly just gave myself a refresher course for a good 30 minutes for my class time.
Videos can greatly enhance learning for those who are primarily visual learners. For some students, merely having the teacher explain how something works isn't sufficient. Being able to visually see it can clarify and engage the student in the learning process.

Web page

Here is my web page address

https://sites.google.com/site/zealouswellness/home

It is a little different than what is expected. I decided to create a web page based more as a reference web site rather than a class I would be teaching. Still, it has most of the basic needs.

Blog Post #4

Well, I must admit that PLNs are not my favorite subject thus far. Most of the web 2.0 tools that I was looking at didn't catch my interest at all. However, I did sign up for a skype account. My brother is serving his mission in Germany and his mission President recently gave them permission to use skype to talk to their families the next time they call home (Mothers day!). Though we will be using my dad's account to do this, I decided it would be good for me to figure out how to use as well. The thing I like most about skype is that it is relatively easy to use and free. Another time I will probably use it is when my brother-in-law (Chris) and his family move out to Colorado. Our families are pretty close to each other (we often end up talking for hours with his wife Linda) and Xane loves to play with their 3 girls.

I don't think that means you always have to be enrolled in school for the rest of your life. However, that also doesn't mean that once we graduate from college or graduate school we should never pick up another book in our life. I think that being a lifelong learner goes hand in hand with developing the talents that we have or do not yet have. As we become older, our interests will most likely change as well. Learning more about these interests and developing the talents that come with them will help us become lifelong learners

So, I totally missed posting how I am going to be doing my projects for the semester last week. Basically, I will just be doing projects 1, 2, and 3 by the assigned deadlines.

Due to my enrollment in the wonderful IP&T 286 class in BYU, I have finally signed up for a blog. Thus far, setting up and figuring out the blog website has not been extremely painful. Most of the options are just as similar as my facebook or e-mail account.
What would I like to gain from this class? Personally, I would really just like to know how I can keep on top of technology. As a Fitness and Wellness major I plan on doing personal training or coaching as a job when I graduate. Knowing and understanding even basic principles of using computers and the internet to keep clients updated will be essential to the success they wish to achieve. Plus, making nutrition/fitness plans or information available to them on the web will make it easier for them to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
